The Fresh Start Educational Program
The Outreach Center provides free
adult education, GED preparation,
learning-skills training, computer literacy, financial literacy,
and employment skills education and
assistance through the Fresh Start
Education Center.
Fresh Start students are varied in
age, from teenagers to the elderly. They also vary in abilities, but
all are taught in a one on one educational environment. Many lack
self-confidence when they first enter the program. According to Fresh
Start Director, Jonathan Welborn, "Most of our students have
been told that they lack certain educational skills, so they come
into our program with low self-confidence and self-esteem." Like
the other programs here at The Outreach Center, Fresh Start encourages
people and helps them rise above their current level.
In 2005, a record 249 individuals
were served in the various programs offered.
159 individuals were assisted with
53 obtaining employment
169 were provided with career employment
skills training.
94 increased their computer skills
76 were assisted with employment
applications
44 were provided interview preparation
15 students obtained their GED
15 students graduated to a school
of higher education
89% of students increased their self-esteem
